This semester is off to such a good start. Alanis Morissette would say that it’s ironic and that it figures that the semester that’s looking the rosiest is also to be my last.
It’s fine with me, though – like high school, college was a rollercoaster, but in reverse. I got the stomach-wrenching bits over with first, and now this last semester is a climb to the crown of the highest hill, from which I can see the whole track I’ve run, spread out beneath me. It’s all right with me to leave off while things are going so well because, like waking in the middle of the dream, the memories and impressions will be fresh and pristine this way.
Needless to say, I’m feeling pretty good. Stewart is on his way. I had a great week and it’ll be a greater weekend.

I figured out what happens to all of the dust Toby noses out of corners and from behind furniture : he eats it. Mom commented on the absence of cobwebs in our basement, which we attributed to the cat, and then I saw him saunter out from behind the bathroom hamper with a fluttery dusty thing stuck to his nose. His tongue flicked out like a hermit crab snatching at something outside its shell, and he ate the cobweb. If nothing else, while he’s been home he’s had a diverse diet (including discarded bits of duck and slices of cheddar from Dad). Also, I took him to the vet today and although I expected the experience to be traumatic for Toby, I ended up laughing at his surprised reaction when the doctor stuck him. Nothing daunts that cat, not even sharp-shot jets of water from across the kitchen meant to deter him from puddling around in the sink.
I’m all packed to go to Houston tomorrow morning. It felt like the trip would never get here! We have a whole week of blue skies and freedom ahead of us.
